Product Description
409 and 409L are titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steels containing approximately 11% chromium, engineered as the cost-effective solution for automotive exhaust systems. The controlled titanium addition forms stable carbides, preventing chromium depletion at grain boundaries and improving weldability. As the most widely used stainless steel in automotive manufacturing, 409/409L offers an optimal balance of oxidation resistance, formability, and economy unmatched by any other alloy at this price point.
- Cost-Effective Corrosion Resistance: 11% Cr content provides adequate oxidation resistance for exhaust system service up to 675°C
- Titanium Stabilized (409L): Low carbon + Ti addition prevents sensitization and ensures good weld ductility
- Excellent Formability: Ferritic structure allows deep drawing and stretch forming for complex exhaust component shapes
- Thermal Fatigue Resistance: Low thermal expansion and high thermal conductivity vs. austenitic grades
